Changes in doctoral committee membership after preliminary exams requires signatures of both outgoing and incoming committee members and the student, as well as justification for the committee change. Approval by the Graduate School is required before holding any examinations.
The student and research supervisor should agree upon members of a Thesis Committee and propose a Committee to the appropriate Graduate Program Committee Chair. During the summer of the second year, the student must submit the PhD Thesis Committee form to the Graduate Committee Chairs (Prof. Bathe, copy to Academic Office) to request approval of the Thesis Committee membership.
The committee members must have three weeks to read and evaluate the completed dissertation. Written assent of the committee members (other than the major professor) will be required before a dissertation will be approved as ready for a final defense. No more than one dissenting vote may be allowed for the approval of the dissertation.
All members of a Dissertation Committee must be members of the Graduate School Faculty or, if from other institutions, must hold equivalent appointments (When choosing dissertation committee members, please note that all members must be present during the oral defense held on campus following the dissertation's completion, and that FIU does not pay for travel or lodging expenses for any.
Assist the student with selecting faculty members to serve on the dissertation committee (membership guidelines). Make sure everyone on the committee is familiar with the roles of Chair or Co-Chair, cognate, and the other members.
The cognate member’s role is to broaden the scholarly representation of the dissertation committee beyond the candidate’s home program.
